What business are you really in?
The question “What business are you really in?” has been something I thought about for years. My company Coester Appraisal Group is in the real estate appraisal business, but at the same time we are not. We do appraisals, reviews, broker price opinions, automated value models, consulting and many other things daily however I am not naïve enough to think this is really our business. I tell people in the office all the time “we are a service company that just happens to do real estate valuations”. The reason for this approach is because I want to emphasis the importance of “service” as our primary goal with our clients.
Our clients truly appreciate the work we do for them on a daily basis. The service we offer above and beyond typical valuations is a value added benefit for both us and the community as whole.Recently there was a nice article about us in Housingwire about how we helped 3 of our clients get 100 million in warehouse lines through a warm introduction to some of our other client. We are not in the warehouse line business or the lending business and never will, but we are in the warm introduction business and will continue to do so. The conceptual idea of just “doing business” is almost a foreign concept to most people as the idea of offering value outside of your normal day-to-day strikes people as odd or that we are scheming. The truth is we truly want our clients to be successful, the better business they have the better we are. I think business is more personal than ever before and now with the world literally at your fingertips its even more important to focus on relationships. Every deal I have ever done has been one-on-one and often it was more like friends agreeing to help each other and not a formal business arrangement. We say we are in the service business because we are. We care about our clients, their business, their families and their life. We want the best for them and they want the best for us. This is the way I’ve always done business and always will.
